About asciiwall

asciiwall is a free online ASCII wallpaper maker: it turns any photo into ASCII art and exports it as a PNG wallpaper at the exact resolution of your screen, from Full HD and 4K to ultrawide and phone. There is no upload and no signup: all processing happens in your browser, and your images never leave your device.

How it works

  1. Load a photo

Drag & drop, paste from the clipboard or pick a file. It stays on your device; nothing is uploaded. Photos with a clear, high-contrast subject work best.

  2. Make it yours

Choose characters, colors, background and effects like glow or grain. The subject is detected automatically, so you can style it apart from the background.

  3. Export your wallpaper

Pick your screen's aspect ratio and export a PNG at its exact resolution (from 1080p to 4K, super ultrawide or phone), or copy the result as plain text.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The ASCII conversion, subject detection and export all run inside your browser. Your images never leave your device.

Do you collect any analytics?

We collect anonymous, aggregated usage stats (like which features get used) through a cookieless analytics tool. Your photos and masks are never sent anywhere, they stay on your device, always.

Will the exported PNG look exactly like the preview?

Yes. The editor is a true preview of the export: the PNG is rendered with the exact same characters, colors and layout you see on screen, just at the full resolution you choose.

What resolutions can I export?

Exact wallpaper resolutions grouped by aspect ratio: 16:9 desktop (1920×1080, 2560×1440, 3840×2160), 21:9 ultrawide (3440×1440), 32:9 super ultrawide (5120×1440), phone (1170×2532) and retro 4:3 (1024×768).

How does it separate the subject from the background?

A segmentation model that runs locally in your browser detects the subject, so you can style the subject and the background independently. You can also adjust the mask by hand or skip it entirely.

Can I use my own text or characters?

Yes. Pick one of the built-in character sets, type your own word or phrase, or build a custom set; the density ramp recalibrates automatically for any characters.

Can I save my work and continue later?

Yes. Your current session is restored automatically when you come back, and you can save a project file (.wpascii) with the photo, mask and every setting to reopen anytime.

What do I need to run it?

A modern browser with WebGL2: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Subject detection is fastest on browsers with WebGPU and falls back to WASM elsewhere.
